There are three things to remember when you get involved in MMA training and fighting.
1. You WILL get injured.
It is a fact of life that when you train hard and push your body you will get injured. There is a difference between hurt and injured (Remember The Program?). To paraphrase, hurt you can play and injured. . . you can't. Jam a finger, hurt. Tear your meniscus and other ligaments while demonstrating a switch kick, injured. Hurt? Ice it, wrap it, elevate it. . . keep going. Injured? Stop, breathe, see a professional. Rehab.
2. You WILL lose.
If this weekend's UFC on Fox taught us anything, it is that no one is unbeatable. Cain Velazquez came into his Championship fight with Junior Dos Santos a perfect 9-0 and got KO'ed 64 seconds into the first round. So long as you take the loss in stride and learn from it, it is not the end of the world. You might learn more from losing a close decision than you do from delivering a killer first round knockout.
3. NOTHING goes to plan.
From training snafu's, injuries, and fight card mix ups nothing is guaranteed. Injuries happen, people don't make medicals, promoters screw you, gyms close, money gets tight, marriages happen, babies are born, people die. . . you just have to roll with it and be flexible. If you let your mind become clouded with all the superfluous distractions then you will obscure the prize ahead of you. Control what you can, and let go what you cannot.
This post is for our brothers on the Silk Fight Team, Mel and Juan. Heads up boys!!!
